Mr. Roller was again the highest scorer with 144, and while he was in with Mr. Read(101 ) 169 runs were added. Mr. Roller was altogether batting for three hours and twenty -five minutes ; Mr. Read for two hours , and neither gave a chance . Mr. Key, too, played good cricket , carrying out his bat for 82. Messrs . N e w h a m(115) and Wyatt(33 and65) batted well for Sussex. and it was unfortunate that the former, owing to an injured hand, was unable to batin the second innings . Mr. F. M. Lucas and Mr. Whitfeld were again unable to play for Sussex . Surrey wonby an innings and 124 runs . Surrey , 501. Sussex, 2 9and168; total , 377. / (11) Surrey v. Yorkshire. Sheffield , July 20, 21, and 22. Mr. Roller , M. Read, and Wood, were all unable to play for Surrey , owingto injuries , and the eleven were at a great disadvantage , especially in the wantof a regular wicket -keeper . Badfielding , too, considerably reduced their chances, and, indeed, had easy catches only been taken, the result might have beendifferent . The wicket at the outset was slow, after recent rains , and, in consequence , the scoring was not very high . Bates ' bowling was especially effective for Yorkshire , and Mr. Read (8 and 69) alone on the Surrey side played up to his reputation . Hall carried his bat through the second innings of Yorkshire for 79 out of 285, a lucky performance , though, it must be added. Yorkshire wonby 188 runs . Yorkshire, 154 and 285 ; total , 438. Bates(Yorkshire ) Beaumont(Surrey) Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 56.2 9 2 2 8 5 1 6 8 1 0 1 1 1 9 (12) Surrey v. Somersetshire. Oval, August 10, 11, and 12. Somersetshire was not well represented , and the want of Mr. Bastard's , bowling, in particular , was felt . Surrey, who wonthe toss , made 635 in six hours and a half, so that they got their runs at an average of nearly a hundredin the hour.. Maurice Read carried out his bat for 186, and Mr. Read(98) and Abel(81) were the next in order . Read's score is the highest he has made for the county , and, during his innings of three hours and thirty -five minutes , he never gave a chance . The one feature in the Somersetshire cricket was the stand of Messrs . Radcliffe (101) and Hewett(85) in the second innings . Whilethey were together 129 runs were added of which the latter contributed 85 by very fine hitting . Surrey's score of 635 is, with two exceptions , the highest ever madein a county match. Surrey , 635. Somersetshire , 83 and 251; total , 334. Beaumont(1st innings Somerset ) Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 14.3 2 9 5 1 7 (13) Surrey v. Somersetshire. Taunton , August 24 and 25.
