Mr. Shuter beganhis captaincy of the year auspiciously in winning the toss , and the home team commenced well with a total of 238 , for which, though , they were almost entirely indebted to two batsmen , Mr. W. W. Read(143 ) and Abel (49), who contributed 192 out of 228 from the bat. While they were together these two batsmen added 181 runs. Beaumontand Bowleymade their first appearance for Surrey in this match. The former was very successful with the ball in the first innings of Essex, taking six wickets at a cost of twenty-four runs. Lohmann, too , bowled with great effect in the second innings ; be delivered 39 overs for 33 runs and seven wickets . Jones scored 48 out of the first total of 67 by Essex.
