James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1886
8 8 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. (5) Nottsv. Sussex. Brighton , July 20 and 21 . TheNottingham captain , though he wonthe toss , decided to send Sussex to the wicket, and this policy proved to be the correct one. 'Thehometeam, whomissed Messrs . F. M. Lucas and Whitfeld , indeed , could do little with the Nottingham bowling, and Mr. C. A. Smith (33 and 0) was the chief scorer in the match on their side . Barnes was responsible for 104 of the total of 262 madebyNotts. Wright's bowling , though , had as muchto do with their success . Notts wonby an Dinnings and 96 runs. Notts, 262. Sussex, 93 and 73 ; total , 166. W .Wright(Notts). Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 8 8 5 4 8 5 1 2 (6) Nottsv. Surrey. Oval, August, 3, 4, and 5. TheSurrey Eleven were unlucky enough to lose the toss , and still more unfor- tunate in having to bat with only ten men, owing to an accident to Mr. Key, who sprained his ankle soon after the start . Shrewsbury and Scotton put on 83 at the outset , but though there were in all nine double figures in the Notts innings the total only reached 263. Surrey began badly , but Mr. W. W. Readwas in his very best form, and he made 135 out of 221 while he was in, one of the very best displays of batting he has ever given . There was a slight rainfall on the third morning, but it did not influence the wicket very much, and the second innings of Notts finished for 215 just at the end of the third day. Surrey would have h a dto m a k e222 to winhadthe gamebeen continued. Duringthe three days 28,628 persons paid at the gate . by far the largest number, we should say, ever recorded in a county match in London. Notts, 263 and 215 ; total , 478. Surrey, 257. (7) Nottsv. E n g l a n d. Nottingham , June 1 12, and 13. Englandhad only a weakeleven, andthe interest in the matchas a conse- quence was greatly reduced . Notts , whowonthe toss , made a good score of 312, Barnes (9) being the only one who did not succeed in getting double figures . The England team were unlucky in having to bat one short , as Mr. O'Brien hurt his handbadly in catching Shrewsbury, and did not go to the wicket . As it was, too, the batting was not of a very high order , and Ulyett (17 and 40), Barlow (33 and 21), Mr. H. W. Bainbridge (29 and 21), andBates (5 and 38) alone madea long stay either time. Notts wonbyaninnings and 46 runs . Notts, 312. England, 1 1 0and156 ; total , 266. Barnes (Notts) Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 58.2 7 9 Notts last played England in 1856.
