Whitfeld and New- h a mwere not able to play for Sussex, but, on the other hand, Shrewsbury had not as yet arrived from Australia , and Notts was thus without its best bat. Through the good play chiefly of Jesse Hide (52) and Humphreys(45) Sussex were able to makea good start , and on the completion of an innings were 34 runs to the good. W h e nthey went in again , though , Attewell and Barnes bowled with such effect that only Mr. Ellis (21) and Quaife (20 not out) were able to makemore thanten runs, and in the endNottshadaneasy victory b y nine wickets. Rainprevented a start till four o'clock on the first day, and as a consequence the scoring was below the average . Surrey, though their total was only 127, had a lead of four runs on the first hands, Gunn(57), Flowers (24), and Shrewsbury (24) contributing 105 of 117 got by Notts from the bat. Mr. W. W. Read (56) and shuter (48) played excellent cricket whenSurrey wentin a second time, and it was chiefly to them that the respectable total of 166 was due. Notts at the finish had lost their five best batsmen for 89 of 171 wanted to win, so that the gamewas drawn in a fairly interesting condition . It is said that 16,000 persons... paid at the gate during the match. Notts, 123 and 89 (five wickets ) ; total 212. Surrey, 127 and 166 ; total , 293. (3) Nottsv. Yorkshire. Sheffield , June 29, 30, and July 1. Agame of fairly high scoring ending in a draw, after three days, with only twenty-eight wickets down. O n the completion of an innings Yorkshire were 147runs to the good, a result due to the determined stand of F. Lee (66 not out) andEmmett(57), who added 110 for the seventh wicket . Gunn(88) andBarnes (77) were even more successful whenNotts went in a second time, and in the end the gamewas drawn, Notts being 158 runs on with two wickets to fall . Despite some excellent cricket by the Notts Eleven the Yorkshiremen were able to claim a very decisive victory . Thebrilliant cricket of Grimshaw(114), F. Lee (101 ), and Bates (72) enabled the latter to get a good start , andtheir total of 424 is the largest ever made by Yorkshire against Notts . Shrewsbury™ (24 and 43), Flowers (76 and 25), Barnes, and Scotton showed good cricket for Notts, and the last -named was in two hours andfifty -five minutes for his second score of 49. Yorkshire , though,had too long a lead and were able to winby an innings and 28 runs , a most creditable performance in every way. Yorkshire , 424. Notts , 187 and 209 ; total , 396.
