Thoughthe wicket at the outset was in excellent order , heavy rain on the second and third mornings interfered with its condition subsequently . Messrs . E. H. Buckland (30) and Stoddart (79) made a favourable commencementfor Middlesex, andthe score was120 beforethe formerwas bowled. Notts, onthe contrary, madea bad start , though the tail played up so well that they were able t o head their opponents by 32 runs on the first hands. O n the third day Middlesex had to play merely for a draw, and, thanks to Mr. O'Brien (50)*^ andMessrs . Butler and Paravicini , who were together an hour for 25 runs, they succeeded at the finish . Notts wanted 74 runs to win, with nine wickets to fall . I nthe first innings of Notts Shrewsbury was caught from the fifth ball of an over. Mr. E. M. Butler , the Harrow captain , made his first appearance for Middlesex in this match. Middlesex 225 and 144 ; total , 369. Notts, 257 and. 39 (one wicket) ; total , 296.
