In the later fixtures the eleven showed up well, and their victory over Yorkshire at Sheffield was a compensation for a long spell of ill -luck . Thoughtheir record showed seven defeats and two wins, there was enough to show that whenfairly represented Middlesex was even last year, under trying conditions , able to take its ownpart with the best . Against such bad fortune maybe instanced one good sign in the addition of two new players in Mr. A. E. Stoddart and West, both of w h o mare likely to be useful all -round cricketers . Yorkshire had a lead of 32 runs on the first hands , a success due chiefly to Lee (72) and Peel (71), who were responsible for 143 out of 181 from the bat. W h e n they went in a second time, Yorkshire had 195 to get to win-not a very difficult task on paper. Burton and the colt West, however, bowled with such effect that Grimshaw(37) alone did very much, and Middlesex in the end were able to claim amajority of 49 runs . Messrs . O'Brien (29 and 56) and E. M. Hadow (44 not out and 56) were the principal scorers on their side . Mr. A. E. Stoddart madehis first appearance for Middlesex in this match.
