James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1886
8 2 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. (10) Lancashire v. Cheshire. Manchester , August 7 and 8. Lancashire , though poorly represented , had even an easier victory than in the previous match. Their success was mainly owing to the remarkable bowling of Briggs, w h otook fifteen Cheshirewickets at a cost of only57 runs. There was not a double figure in Cheshire's first innings . Yates (76), Biddolph (50), and Mr. A. N. Hornby(51), contributed 177 to Lancashire's total of 284. Lan- cashire wonby an innings and 141 runs . Lancashire , 284. Cheshire , 35 and 108; total , 143. A singularly exciting finish , ending in favour of Surrey , with only a wicket to spare . Mr. Shuter and Abel put on 107 for the first wicket of Surrey ; but, except Mr. Diver (60), no one else did very much, and the total only reached 280. Mainly through the good bowling of Jones , however, they were enabled to claima lead of 113 on the first hands, and this though there were sevendouble figures in the first innings of Lancashire . The wicket did not play well after the first day, and it was thought that Surrey , though they had only 116 to win on the third morning, would find it a very difficult task . So it proved , for five runs were still wanted when Beaumont, the last batsman, came in, and it was only the cool play of Mr. Diver, who carried out his bat for 26, which gave Surrey the victory at the finish . In the second innings of Surrey Abel scored 44 out of 55 while he was in. Surrey won by one wicket . Surrey , 280 and 116 (nine wickets ) ; total , 396. Lancashire , 167 and 228 ; total , 395 . D. Buxton, and, in addition , to lose the choice of innings . Lancashire , whowent in first , madea big score of 342 , and after this the result was hardly in doubt. Mr. Francis , Mr. C. E. Green, and Jones played well , but otherwise the Essex batting was only of a moderate character -certainly not up to its true form. Briggs and Barlow were chiefly instrumental in the easy victory of Lancashire . Theformer scored 85 and took seven wickets ; the latter made73, in addition to taking nine wickets . Lancashire wonby an innings and 129 runs. Lanca- shire , 342 ; Essex, 116 and 97 ; total , 213 . Barlow(Lancashire) Briggs (2nd innings Essex) Overs. Maidens. R u n s.
