T H O U G Hsuffering considerably from their usual inability to place their full strength in the field , except on rare occasions , the Lancashire eleven had, on the whole, a successful season . Theydid not meet Notts at all , it is true , and the refusal of Kent to play the return match at Tunbridge removed from their programme another fixture in which they would have been sure of a hard fight . Still , in spite of manydifficulties , Lancashire cricket last year was decidedly above the average certainly all round, of a type better than in 1884. Mr. Hornby, though there had been rumours of his retirement , retained the cap- taincy, andhis energy had, as of old , a favourable influence on the team gene- rally . Unfortunately , Mr. A. G. Steel was only able to play very rarely , and the Rev. Vernon Royle, who has usually been of such service in the later fixtures , was a conspicuous absentee . Pilling , too, owing to ill -health , was unable to keep wicket regularly , so that the Lancashire eleven were never seen to the best advantage .
