STEEL, E. E. (Marlborough ). A very promising young player ; bats in good form, and fields well . TAYLOR, F. (Clifton ). A very careful and steady batsman ; plays the game thoroughly ; excels in driving ; an improving field , and bowls slow r o u n d-a r m. W O O D, R. A good all -round player ; business prevents him rendering any 1 assistance to his County ; bats and bowls left -handed, and excels in both. M I D D L E S E X . COTTRELL, C. E. (Harrow). A useful bat, scoring freely at times ; bowls fast round, at times effectively ; muchimproved in bowling , more in his ball than m o s tfastbowlers. FORD, A. F. J. (Repton and Cambridge ) . A very useful all -round player ; bowls with very high delivery , ery and is very effective when wicket helps in any way; bats well , and can hit hard ; excellent field at slip ; did not play last y e a r. FORD, W. J. (Repton and Cambridge). A powerful hitter , greatly excelling in forward drives ; can bowl a little ; did not play for the County last season. LYTTELTON, Hon. ALFRED(Eton and Cambridge). The best amateur wicket- keeper of the day, standing well up and rarely missing a chance ; a very dangerous batsman , having defence as well as hitting powers ; played brilliant cricket during the later matches of the County. LYTTELTON, H o n. E. (Eton and Cambridge). A fine free hitting bat, very dangerous when well set ; a good field near the wicket ; plays little first- class cricketn o w. O'BRIEN , T. C. Has fully justified a reputation formed around the Metropolis ; is a brilliant hitter , and held his own against the best bowling. PEARSON, T. S. (Rugbyand Oxford) . Hasbeen most painstaking and energetic for Middlesex ; a reliable batsman, rarely failing to get runs, and never relaxes vigilance in the field ; is a thorough cricketer . ROBERTSON, J. A useful fast bowler ; always accurate , and very dangerous whenthe wicket helps him at all . THORNTON, C. I. (Eton and Cambridge )). Still gives an occasional glimpse of his wonderful hitting powers, and keeps up a fair average by reason of a good defence , which should keep him in the cricket field longer than most batsmen, havingso free a style . S T U D D, G. B. (Eton and Cambridge). Adangerous bat, hitting very freely ; a magnificent field ; in this department has no superiors (Hon. Ivo Bligh's Australian Team, 1882-83 ). Played little last year . V E R N O N, G. F. (Rugby). Hits with great vigour , and scores very fast ; very fine out field ; with a sure pair of hands (Hon. Ivo Bligh's Australian Team, 1882-83). W A L K E R, I. D. (Harrow). Has retired from the captaincy with his batting powers little impaired ; judged by ordinary seasons his success was remark- able, if not so great as in 1883 ; Middlesex will feel his absence severely ; has excellent defence , and hits very hard , especially on the off -side ; fine field , and good lob bowler ; good captain , and excellent judge of the game. W E B B E, A. J. (Harrowand Oxford). A batsman with excellent defence , and bats well , cutting very smartly ; one of the very best bats in England on a difficult wicket ; a safe field . Captain for 1885 .
