Humphry (Captain ) : Whenset is a hard hitting bat, very fine cut and drive , but he is nervous on first going in ; a very good field anywhere ; proved a very energetic captain . *J. M. Swayne : A first -rate school bowler (medium right ), always straight and a good length , with a slight break fromthe off , and a puzzling variation of pace ; might makea good batif he cared to take trouble enough. A. L. Watson : a good bat, possessing great patience and a strong defence , though his style is a little cramped by a prejudice against forward play ; a very good field and safe catch ; (Captain for 1885.) C. M. Jones : Bats in very good style , especially to fast bowling ; he has plenty of hitting power and a fair defence ; must learn to adapt his style to slow bowling ; a fair field , though rather slow . C. H. Nicholls : Avery steady bowler (slow mediumright-arm) with a good deal of spin and break, but the hard wicketshavenot suited h i m; a careful bat withoutm u c hstyle ; a very fine field at point . A.G. Watney : Canhit hard and might makea good bat if he would not drawawayfromhis wicket , but that fault spoils all his play ; a fair field , andoccasionally bowls . *B. Talbot : Might become a good bat if he would only watchthe ball ; an erratic bowler (slow right ) who could bowl a difficult ball , and proved very useful . *E. H. Coles : Asa bat wastoo nervous to do himself justice . Bowledfast right with a high delivery and a good deal of spin , but was too erratic ; a safe catch in the long field . C. L. Hemmerde: Aclean hitter with aweakdefence ; moderately good field . *F. H. Birch : Bowled fast right with agood delivery ; but though straight his bowling was generally over-pitched . H. Lyon: Kept wicket for the eleven in good style , being very quick on the off side . W h e nhe learns to watch the ball more carefully will make a good bat, as he has apretty style and some good strokes . J. S.
