(1) Sussex v. Yorkshire. Huddersfield , June 12 and 13. Messrs. Blackman, N e w h a m, and Whitfeld were absent , and the Sussex eleven only madea poor show. Thoughthey wonthe toss , Emmett'sbowling proved so puzzling to the majority of the batsmen that eight of them onlytogether scored 20. Tester (46) and Mr. McCormick(41) contributed 87 out of 124 from the bat, and in the second innings their display was still worse, Tester (11) and Mr. Ellis (10) alone reaching double figures . Hall went in first for Yorkshire, andwasnot out at the finish of the innings . His score of 128, four morethan were got by the Sussex eleven from the bat, was madewithout achance . Yorkshire wonby an innings and 94 runs . Yorkshire , 285. Sussex , 133 and58 ; total , 191. Emmett(Yorkshire ). Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 51.3 3 1 6 2 1 1 (2) Sussex v. Yorkshire. Brighton , August 21, 22 and 23. The Sussex eleven deserve every credit for one of the best performances of the season . A t the end of the first day they had reached 266 for three wickets , and the innings ultimately reached 359. To this Mr. Newhamcon- tributed 100 , Mr. Whitfeld (who was five hours at the wickets ) 80, Humphrey 65, and Mr. Blackman53. Chiefly through the effective bowling of H u m - phreys , whose lobs produced the fall of seven wickets for 57 runs, the York- shiremenwere all dismissed for 164, and as they did only very slightly better in the second innings , Sussex claimed a very creditable victory by an innings and 19 runs . Sussex, 359. Yorkshire , 164 and176. Total , 340 .
