The Australians started badly, but though six wickets were down, a determined stand of Blackham(69) and Midwinter (60 not out) enabled them to reach a total of 229. Mr. W. G. Grace, though still rather lame from his recent accident , played his very best cricket , and he was three hours and a half at the wickets for his score of 107. Lord Harris ' 35 was a good innings , but otherwise thebatting was not of a very high order . The Gentlemen had a lead of 22 runs on the first hands, but after this the Australians had always a little in hand, and Spofforth's effective bowling turned the scale in their favour at the close . The Gentlemenhad not their full strength in the absence of the H o n. Alfred Lyttelton and Messrs. K e m pand O'Brien . The Australians won by46 runs . Australians , 229 and 219 ; total , 448. Gentlemen, 261 and 141 ; total , 402.
