Somecapital cricket was shown onboth sides , and the batting all round was above the average . Mr. H. G. O w e n(33 and 69) played really good cricket for Essex, and Mr. J. J. Readhit vigorously towards the close of the second innings . Mr. W. W. Readwas principal scorer for Surrey with 91 and57 not out, and his batting hadmuchto dowith the result . Abel opened the season well for Surrey with 93, and Barratt and Jones added 105 for the last wicket , 85 of which were bythe latter . In all 994 runs were totalled for 34wickets . Surrey , 398 and 100 (four wickets ) ; total , 498. Essex, 247 and 249 ; total , 496. (6) Surrey v. Australians. Oval, M a y19 and 20. Thewicket was not in the best condition , and the superior bowling of the Australians thus showed to great advantage . Surrey got six of the best Austra- lian wickets downfor 82 ; and Scott , whocame in eighth , ought to have been run out when he had got a single . After this , though , he played very fine cricket , and his 71 entirely altered the aspect of the game. Mr. Shuter andAbel batted so well for Surrey at the outset that 68 runs were got without a wicket. Afterwards, though , Spofforth established a complete funk, and the innings only reached 97, Abel (35) and Mr. Shuter contributing 63 out of 87 from the bat. In their second innings they madea slightly better show, but the result was never in doubt, and the Australians won with eight wickets to spare . Mr. P. H. Morton, who is entitled to play under the family homequalification , madehis first appearance for Surrey in this match. Australians , 195 and48 (two wickets ) ; total , 243. Surrey, 97 and 144 ; total , 241 . (7) Surrey v. Hants. Oval, M a y22 and23. Mr. Laceywas not able to play, and Hants was consequently not seen at its best . Thebest feature of the match was the batting of Mr. E. O. Powell , on his first appearance for Hants. H e showed steady cricket in each innings , andhis scores of 26 (not out) and 99 were in every wayexcellent dis- plays . Mr. M. P. Bowdenwas even more successful on the Surrey side , and his two innings of 42 and 89 (not out) were free from a mistake . In the first innings of Hants every wicket was bowled. Surrey won by seven wickets . Surrey , 207 and 163 (three wickets ) ; total , 370. Hants , 70 and 296 ; total , 366 . Jones(1st innings Hants). Overs. Maidens. R u n s. H econtributed 162 (not out) to their first total of317, and Barratt and he added 103 for the last wicket. The best feature of the Leicestershire batting was the second innings of Mr. W. H. H a y. H e went in first , and carried out his bat for 69 out of 186. Surrey, 317 and16 (three wickets ) ; total , 333. Leicestershire , 146 and 186 ; total , 332. Abel(2nd innings Leicestershire ). Overs.
