T H ESurrey eleven , as in the previous season , showed generally good cricket . Theywere unlucky in the loss from ill -health , of Henderson, a youngster who hadmadesuch a promising debut in 1883 ; and Jones, who it was hoped might, onhis return into the eleven , show the same accuracy as a bowler as before his illness , too, proved a disappointment . Still , on the whole, though another good bowler is still sadly wanted, the cricket of the Surrey team all round was very creditable , and their summary was a satisfactory one. In batting , the Countyjust nowis particularly strong , and the advantage of having much the sameplayers regularly was shown in the excellent working of the eleven , and the generally good fielding . Mr. Read's batting , and the effective bowling of Mr.C. E. Horner, were the most noteworthy features of the season . In Wood, Surrey has secured a valuable addition as a fair wicket -keeper , and a very useful bat to its eleven ; and in Lohmannit produced a colt who is likely , with care and attention , to be a really good all -round cricketer .
