James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1885
T H EC O U N T I E SI N 1 8 8 4. 1 0 7 Just before the close of the first Australian innings , Shaw's hand was seriously injured by a hard return of Palmer, and this madethe subsequent show of Notts the morecreditable . The Australians went in first , andmade a good total of 265, to which Spofforth was the principal contributor with 54, his highest score in England . The County had to bat one short ; but , chiefly through the excellent cricket of Flowers (69) and Gunn(68) were able to head their opponents by eight runs. The fielding of the Notts eleven was all round so good that the Australians , whenthey went in a second time, were none of them able to do much, and the tenth wicket fell for 141. This left the County 134 to win, and in the thirty -five minutes left they made15 for the loss one wicket . Thegame, therefore was drawn, Notts wanting 119 to win with nine wickets to fall . Cooper played for the Australians in this match instead of Boyle. Notts, 273 and15 (one wicket) ; total , 288. Australians , 265 and 141 ; total , 306. B A T T I N GA V E R A G E S . Northof Englandv. Australians. Nottingham , September 1, 2, and 3. Thesecond defeat of the Fourth Australian team by an eleven representing the North of England . The victory was the more creditable , inasmuch as, in the absence of Mr. A. G. Steel and Ulyett , the North had certainly not its full strength . The ground at the outset was all in favour of the bowlers , and on the first day eighteen wickets fell for 186. The Australians had a lead of nine runs on the first hands, and when five wickets were down in the second innings for 53, the game seemed almost over . Flowers and Barlow, however , entirely altered the aspect of the match, and these two batsmen added 158, Flowers scoring 90 in two hours and a half . Barlow went in whenthe second wicket wasdownand was not out. H ewas batting four hours and a half , andduring his long innings never gave a chance-a wonderful performance on a difficult wicket. The Australians had 247 to win and Barlow and Attewell bowled so successfully , with the ground to help them, that they were all out for 76. Barlow's all-roundcricket wasthefeature of the match.
