Lancashire. Manchester, M a y22, 23, and24. Lancashire had not its full strength , and the Derbyshire eleven very nearly pulled through , being only defeated by42 runs, after having all the worst of the first hands. Briggs' hitting in the first innings was the best feature of the Lancashire batting . H escored 112 out of 172 while in, without achance . Sugg , who had previously played for Yorkshire by residence , made his debut for Derbyshire in this match, and with success , contributing 73 out of 106 while he was at the wickets , and 26-the highest score in each innings . Shacklock , who had previously been identified with Notts , made his first appearance in the matchfor Derbyshire , the county of his birth . His bowling proved very effective in the second innings of Lancashire , resulting in five wickets at a cost of 42 runs. Lancashire , 243 and 99 ; total , 342. Derbyshire , 185 and115 ; total , 300. Read and Diver were absent , were able to claim a victory with five wickets to spare . The ground was in bad condition , andat the finish Surrey found it by no means an easy task to get the 84 runs wanted to win. Derbyshire had to follow on in a minority of 127 runs ; but thanks mainly to the good play of Mr. Docker (58) and Chatterton (45) they madea capital show in their second innings , and Surrey had really not much inhandat the close . Messrs . Shuter (61) and Roller (36) put on 81 runs for the fifth wicket in Surrey's first innings . The victory of the Southern eleven wasin a great measure due to the effective bowling of Mr. Horner. H etook nine wickets for 109 runs . Surrey, 215 and 84 (five wickets ) ; total , 299.
