ACCORDINGto the recognised principle of adjudging the premiership of County cricket , Notts was entitled to the first place in 1883. Out of twelve matches played only one was lost , and though as manyas seven were drawn-more than one of them by no means in favour of Nottinghamshire -the eleven were all round certainly not inferior to that of any other County. Morley's absence , from illness , weakenedthe bowling materially ; but if in this department Notts washardly quite as formidable as in some previous years , in batting it was un- doubtedly strong , as its consistently high scoring during the August matches fully proved . Barnes, successful as he has been, never batted with greater effect ; and Shrewsbury, Flowers , Selby, and Gunnall did well of the older hands. Mills , by reason of his vigorous hitting , proved a useful addition to the team; and Wright's extraordinary innings against Gloucestershire , at Notting- h a m,helped himmaterially in the averages . Alfred Shawstill continues to be the most reliable bowler of Notts, and Flowers was also , on the whole, very effective ,
