James Lillywhte's Cricketers' Annual 1884

6 8 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. (5) Lancashirev. Notts. Manchester , August 9, 10, and 11. Thefine cricket of the brothers D. Q. (75) and A. G. Steel (60), enabled Lancashire to have the best of a drawnmatch. Raininterfered very materially with the game, and otherwise , excepting for the bowling of Watson, and a good second innings of 48 by Shrewsbury, there was little noteworthy in the cricket . Thetwo Steels put on 99 runs while they were together . A tthe finish Notts were still 18 runs behind Lancashire , having lost two wickets in their second innings. Notts m a d e110 in their first innings in bothmatchesagainst Lanca- shire . Lancashire , 218. Notts , 110 and 90 (for two wickets ) ; total , 200. Watson(1st innings Notts) Overs. 4 4 . 1 Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 2 5 4 1 7 (6) Lancashirev. Surrey. Oval, August 23, 24, and 25. Another somewhat sensational match, ending this time in favour of Surrey. Lancashire was in a minority of seven runs on the first innings , but the fine cricket of Mr. Taylor (83) and Barlow (88), who made123 runs before a wicket fell in the second , turned the game altogether in their favour . WhenMr. Keyjoined Mr. Roller , Surrey still wanted 112 to win, with only Mr. Horner and Barratt to follow . So well though , did the two amateurs play, that 56 of themhadbeen madeat the close of the play on the second day, and the following morningthey wonthe match without a mistake (Mr. Key, 60 ; Mr. Roller , 55), as creditable a display of batting as was seen during the season . In the second innings Crossland's two wickets cost 108 runs. Surrey wonby three wickets . Surrey , 82 and 234 (for seven wickets ) ; total , 316. Lancashire , 75 and 240 ; total, 315.
