T H Ecollapse of the Lancashire eleven in their concluding matches was one of the surprises of the season . Their form all round at the commencement, was almost without a fault , and there seemed every reason for the prediction that they would be again very near the championship of Countycricket . U pto the first weekof July they knewno defeat , but in their Southern tour, at the close of the campaign, they were beaten in succession by Kent, Surrey, and Gloucestershire , and their cricket was very disappointing . Theywere not able , it is true , always to get their best eleven , and Mr. A. G. Steel was only present on very rare occasions . Pilling , too, was lost to the teammorethan once from illness , as was Robinson twice . Unfortunately for the team also , Mr. Hornby, after the first few matches , did nothing with the bat, and Mr. Royle was out of form at the finish . Altogether Lancashire had not the best of luck, but their cricket , it mustbe admitted , showed a great falling -off all round in August. R e s u l t sof M a t c h e s.
