James Lillywhte's Cricketers' Annual 1884
5 0 L I L L Y W H I T E ' SC R I C K E T E R S ' A N N U A L . (5) Cambridgev. Oxford. June 25 , 26, and 27. Public opinion had predicted an easy victory for Cambridge, and this estimate proved to be fully justified . The Cantabs were, undoubtedly all round muchthe better eleven , and, in addition , they had considerably the best of the luck. It was a great misfortune for Oxford, with a far from reliable batting side , to lose the toss , especially after the rain , but their collapse in the first innings admitted of little extenuation , and could only be explained onn the ground of utter lack of confidence . The discredit of this performance was greatly redeemed by the excellent batting of Messrs. Page and Walker in the second innings , and too muchpraise cannot be accorded to these two batsmen for the pluck they showed whenthe game was all against them. The score was 15, with Mr. Leslie out, when Mr. Page joined Mr. Walker, and the total was 167 whenthe former was caught . Considering that they had to follow in a minority of 160, Oxford showed up better than might have been expected , and their defeat by seven wickets was not a disgrace . Mr. Wright's batting for Cambridge was the feature of the match. In his two innings there was only one mistake, and his aggregate of 131 entitles him to the distinction of the highest scorer in the forty -nine Inter -University matches . The success of the Cambridge eleven , too, was in a great measure due to Mr. C. A. Smith. In all hehad ahandin the downfall of twelve Oxford wickets , scoring nine from his own bowling and catching three off Mr. C. T. Studd. C A M B R I D G E . b P e a k e . C. T.
