Thebowling crease shall be in a line with the stumps ; six feet eight inches in length ; the stumps in the centre ; with a return crease at each end towards the bowler at right angles . T H EP O P P I N GC R E A S E . 8. The popping crease shall be four feet from the wicket , and parallel to it ; unlimited in length , but not shorter than the bowling crease . T H EG R O U N D . 9. Theground shall not be rolled , watered , covered , m o w n, or beaten during amatch except before the commencementof each innings and of each day's play, when, unless the in-side object , the ground shall be swept and rolled for not morethan ten minutes . This shall not prevent the batsman frombeating the ground with his bat, nor the batsman nor bowler from using sawdust in order to obtain a proper foothold . T H EB O W L E R . 10. Theball must be bowled ; if thrown or jerked , the umpire shall call "n oball." 11. Thebowler mayrequire the batsman at the wicket from which he is bowling to stand on that side of it which he m a ydirect . T H EO V E R . 12. T h eball shall be bowledin overs of four balls from each wicket alter- nately . W h e nfour balls have been bowled, and the ball is finally settled in the bowler's or wicket-keeper's hands, the umpire shall call " over." The bowler shall deliver the ball with one foot on the ground behind the bowling crease , andwithin the return crease , otherwise the umpire shall call " no ball ; such " no ball " shall not be reckoned as one of the " over." If the bowler shall bowl the ball so high over or so wide of the wicket that , inthe opinion of the umpire, it is not within reach of the striker , the umpire shall call " wide ball ; " such " wide ball " shall not be reckoned as one of the o v e r.
