R O E, W.N. (Cambridge). A good bat, with great punishing powers ; has be- come invaluable as a fieldsman ; useful slow bowler . Ross, H. A hard-hitting bat; rather too anxious to score ; a very good field . SAINSBURY, E. First -class bat against any bowling , combining the greatest patience with hard hitting ; as a lob bowler often very successful against thebest teams. S W E E T, C. F. Greatly improved as a bat ; a fine field . T E R R Y, F. W. A first -class wicket -keep, can take the fastest bowling ; a plucky a n dd e t e r m i n e dbat. W E L M A N, F. T. A excellent wicket -keep and good bat ; is also a fine fielder , though his place at the wicket seldom allows him to show it . W I N T E R, C. At times a fine fast bowler with considerable spin. A brilliant batsman, and very difficult to dismiss if allowed to get set ; a safe field ; does not play at all for his county. BAINBRIDGE, H. W. (Eton and Cambridge). A useful all-round cricketer ; a good out-field ; bowl a great pace , at times with success ; improving bat. CATTLEY, S. W. (Eton). Improved considerably in his cricket all -round last season ; has good defence ; showed a great advance in his fielding , which w a sv e r ysmart. C L A R K E, C. C. Plays in good form ; a splendid field ; at times successful as a slow round-arm bowler ; did not play for Surrey last year . C L A R K E, M. C. A very steady bat ; fair field . D I V E R, E. J. A very fine bat, having great powers of wrist , which he uses to the best advantage ; a good field anywhere. G A M E, W. H. (Sherborne and Oxford) . A batsman with a style of his own, but hits hard, and is very dangerous if allowed to get set ; a fine long- field , with a sharp throw in ; only played once last year. H O R N E R, C. E. (Cheltenham and Oxford). A very useful fast round-arm bowler, of great service to the County ; moderate bat and field , but played morethan one useful innings for the County. K E Y, K. J. (Clifton and Oxford). Improvedverym u c hlast year as a bat ; hits freely all round, with good defence ; played a fine innings against Lancashire at the Oval; rather slow in the field ; has not come on as was hoped as a b o w l e r. LINDSAY, W. (Winchester ). Agood bat, with a pretty cut ; a splendid field , and a sure catch ; did not play last seasen . R O L L E R, W. E. ( Westminster and Cambridge). Showeda very great improve- ment last year in his batting , and played some brilliant innings for the County, notably against Lancashire at the Oval , which match he greatly helped to win; hits well all round, with improved defence ; safe in thə field ; a very good slow bowler , in which department he was of great use . R E A D, W. W. One of the very best batsmen of the day; plays very straight , and hits all round with great freedom ; a fine field anywhere, and can also keep wicket (Hon. Ivo Bligh's Australian Team, 1883). S H U T E R, J. (Winchester ). A pretty bat, playing hard on the off-side ; played fine cricket ; a splendid field ; Captained the Eleven with great s u c c e s s .
