Reed, Captain (30) : played the gamewell all round, andmadean excellent captain ; scored better at the beginning of the season than on the hard quick wickets in July , but was then decidedly unlucky ; a good safe field ; as abowler hardly came up to the formhe showed last year. J. L. Reed (14) : veryuseful as a bowler, having at times bowled with marked success ; is inclined to be ratherslowin the field ; battedm u c hbetter this season, butlost his wicketseveral times b ynotplaying with a straight bat. G. Hornby (10) : did not bowl this season as well as h edid last year ; as a bat started badly, but improved later on; is a useful m a n, always plaving upand doing his best . T. Dickenson (35) : secured the best average for the season , andplayed well throughout ; is a very sure catch , a clean and quick field , and throws in well; fair change bowler . W. Renouf (11 ): a very useful manin the eleven , being a good long-stop and a steady and patient bat ; is inclined , however , to pay too much respect to the bowling , and, consequently , does not score the runs he might ; will probably gain more confidence another season . G. Lance (8) : bats steadily with a good straight bat, but needs , like Renouf, to respect the bowling less ; ought , however , to make a very useful bat in time ; notquick enough in the field . S. Godfray (10) : bats in too cramped a style ever to bat well; is useful and quick in the field . F. M a w(10) : ought to bat well, but only made onedecent score during the season ; prefers to get awayfrom his wicket andhave a pull , consequently soon gets out ; needs keeping up to the markin the field . F. Lancaster (12) . w e a kas abat, but madetwo fair scores ; slow in the field . H. V. Carrington (6) : bats in apromising style , but has not done muchduring the season ; also a slow field . C. W. Burn(3) : considering the small amount of cricket he had previously played , did fairly well; ought to be useful next season . B A T T I N GA V E R A G E S . 1 0 I n n s. T i m e s n o to u t. Challen (35.13 ) : good all-roun1 cricketer : possesses strong defence and tremendous punishingpowers ; has scored largely ; straight bowler, varying his pace and pitch , and provingverydestructive ; verv quick field, " couldn't glue to her" at short-slip . W .H. Garne(30.6 ) : correct andpatient bat, with a beautiful cut ; his style is best suited to a fast wicket and fast bowling ; has three times topped the century ; good field at cover, anduseful change bowler for a few overs . A. Pretty (22.13 ) : cameon wonderfully in batting ; almost certain to stay in, hits well all round; as a wicket -keep stands back and dispenses with a long-stop ; has madesomecapital catches ,but at times hardly maintained his reputation . A. W. Platt (17.17 ) : played some excellent innings , especially at the latter endof the season; hasa goodsquare-leg hit ; very smartat point, a n d a safe field in the country ; his bowling appears to havedeserted himthis year. H. E. Platt (9.10 ): sometimes makesruns whenwanted; owing to an unfortunate accident , was prevented fromplaying during the last fortnight ; fields up, and occasionally bowls fast unders with effect , vide analysis . F. C. Grey (6.18 ) : can drive andhit to leg well, but is weakin de- fence, particularly onthe off-stump; in the field often picks up very cleverly , but doesn't start soon enough to cover any ground; apt to misjudge a catch . F. C. Preston (3.6 ) : promisedwell inpractice ,butdisappointed in matches; will dobetter another season . A. G .Henfrey (7.2) : cameout as a bowler until ill -health prevented his playing ; plucky little bat, buthasa lot to learn ; a keen field . S. J. Whitworth (3) : did good service in several matches with his slow round; feeble bat, can't keep the ball down; average field . W .B. Curgenven (2.5 ) : bats fairly at times , and might possibly makea bowler ; very slack in the field ; has a good return fromlong-leg. F. C. Robinson (3.2 ) : his batting saved us fromdefeat ononeoccasion , buthe did little afterwards ; wants practice . J. G. Lovell (2.2 ) : very slow on his pins ; bats in nice style , but seldom stays long at the wickets ; u n c e r t a i ncatch.
