ELEVENIN 1883.-R. T. Cæsar : a most satisfactory captain ; very good bat, hitting hard on the on-side , but was unlucky ; useful changebowler, and good field anywhere. G. A. Maltby : the most reliable bat in the eleven; played very straight and had a pretty cut ; the bowler of the team, being over m e d i u mpace with goodbreak back. T. R. Phillips : very nervous as a bat, butimproved towards the close of the season ; fair field . W. S. Cavell : anexcellent cover-point ;batted in awkwardstyle , but often got runs ; bowled mediumpace. H. A. Steel : very promising bothwith bat and ball , but mustlearn to be quicker in the field . R. Lewis : a very patient batsman, woulddo better to play the ball and not let the ball play the bat; fair point . A. W .Denny: very promising as a bat; played excellently for his size , and improved as a field. P. W . W o o d: verygoodfield ; rustic bat. A. R. Willis fair bata n dfield . A. C. Scott : a brilliant and punishing bat, his cutting and driving being especially fine , while w h e nonceset,his defence was nearly perfect ; on two occasions topped the century , and averaged 41.3 per innings ; was a good fast bowler, and fine field near the wicket . H. Woolsey: splendid field , being especially good in the country ; very fair bat, hits hard and oftengotruns; a useful m e d i u m-pacebowler. King'sCollege School. Captain , H. W. Myatt ; Hon . Myatt(18) : a good bat with plenty of defence ,butwants morepractice ; a good slow bowler withbreak, and very smart in the field ; has madean excellent captain . F. B. G. Peppé (14) : a good steady bat ; good overhand bowler, and good field . E. R. Forshaw (13) : can hit well,buthasnot muchdefence ; good field anywhere, especially at point . B. T. Richard- son (10) : a good bat ; fair bowler ; moderate field . J. H. C. Johnston (9) : can cut fairly well; canbowl a little ; mustlearn to throw. H. J. Maule (25 ) : anall-round good player ; bats in good style ; bowls slow round-arm; should have played more for the school . J. Porter (8) : a moderate bat, being too anxious to hit ; can throw well . S. W. Comyns (8) : a steadybat; a fairly goodbowler; shouldbe moreenergetic in the field . J. C. Hallen (6.4): canbat and field well at times ; has not muchdefence . E. A. Cowans (5) : a mode- ratebat; bowls well slow left over ; a very brilliant fielder , especially on the off-side . A. E.P. Hughes (4) : a moderate bat; can field well in the long-field ; will improve. LancingCollege .--Matches played , 10 ; won, 7 ; drawn , 1 ; lost , 2.-ELEVEN IN 1883.-* T. Pellatt , Capt. (27.1 ) : hits clean and hard ; has madea great manyruns in the last fewmatches; must be congratulated as the captain of a very successful team. *H. Hardy (15.3) : good steady bat, punishes a loose ball well ; his bowling has been invaluable to the teamthroughout the season; his loss will be equally felt . *H. B. Kane (12.3 ) : good wicket-keep,butshould practice taking leg balls ; has not quite fulfilled his last year's promise inbatting ; pretty cut. W. S. Melsome (21.4) : thoroughly sound bat; very pretty style ; plays most carefully through a long innings ; has improved in his fielding at point during the season . H. R. Stock (16.9 ) : agood bowler on his day, but uncertain ; hasde- fended his wicket well in one or two matches, and can punish loose bowling admirably ; rather too fond of a hit . W. H. B. Wix (12) : most useful bat, never loses his heart, and generally managesto makeruns ; very pretty on the leg stump; energetic field ; captain for 1884. W. H. Brown (6.7 ) : stylish bat, but has failed to makeruns this year ; fair changebowler; safe catch . H. Hammond(11.7 ) : steady bat, played well at the beginning of the season , buthas been unlucky of late ; useful change bowler . * W. J. Wilson (16.1 ) : useful bat, with eccentric style ; should use his wrists more. T. W. Cook (9.2 ) : a promising bat; his fielding at cover has been quite beyond praise . A.
