T H EU N I V E R S I T I E SA N DP U B L I CS C H O O L SI N 1 8 8 3. 1 3 3 of pulling balls when straight ; hits well away and hard at leg balls ; is too apt to get into a position to play forward before he gets a sight of the ball ; a good and painstaking field . W. Russell , 1882-3 : has not been quite as successful in bowling as last year, but has nevertheless done good service ; has a good break from leg ; should learn to vary his pace with an occasional fast one ; as a bathas improved muchof late ; with patience ought to makea good bat, having hitting power in every direction ; the most active field ; a good short slip . J. Aitken, 1882-3 : the wicket -keeper of the eleven ; has shown brilliant form behind the sticks ; played very well at the outset , but unfortunately seems to have lost a good deal of his form lately ; is a good hard hitter , using his wrists well . E. S. Maxwell, 1883 : has fielded very well at point , being smart and quick to return the ball ; has beenthe most successful bat in matches ; has ahard cut, andhas a good on drive ; is an erratic fast bowler . W. L. D. Peddie , 1883 : has a very fair defence as a bat, but is apt to jumpin front of his wickets when playing at a leg ball ; has a good cut behind the wickets ; should learn to play agood deal more with his wrists ; has been tried as a bowler , but seems afraid to keep the balls well up ; a sure field , but does not run forward to meet the ball , or cover ground enough . A. J. M. Duncan , 1883 ; a very pretty bat ; a hard hitter to the off , with strength in his wrist -play ; never plays tamely except at leg- balls ; has been rather unsuccessful , but next year ought to make an excellent bat; fields capitally at short-leg ; should practise bowling, as he has an easy action , and a good break from off . W. B. Mactier . 1883 : has not been very successful in bowling , though on one occasion cameoff very well ; should learn pitch ; as a bat has a style of his own. which he ought to try to improve ; a slow but sure field , not covering muchground. W. F. Methuen , 1883 : a brilliant field at cover , butdoes not afterwards cover ground in proportion to his pace ; made runs at Fettes, butgot out of form; has a good stroke betweenpoint and cover. F. W . Spence , 1883 : has not played much for the eleven ; a fair bowler ; might make agoodhitter next year ; is a fair catch in the long -field . A nunfortunate outbreak of diptheria , four weeks from the beginning of the summer term, necessitated the breaking up of the school , and migration , four weeks later , to Windermere, where the Fettesians remained a month. In consequence the cricket of the school received a severe blow, andthere are nobatting or bowling averages . L O R E T T OS C H O O L . Captain , R. C. Kitto . R e s u l t sof M a t c h e s.
