1 3 2 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. T H EWINCHESTERELEVENIN 1883 .-*A. R. Cobb : as captain , took pains and hadhis eleven well in hand ; was a goodbat having a good defence , and being able to punish anything but really first -rate bowling ; a useful wicket- keeper. *G. W. Ricketts : a useful manin the eleven , but was not always to be relied upon for runs ; he ought to become a really good bat ; a safe , and at times, brilliant field . *B. E. Nicholls : quite a good school bowler, being always straight and, at times , difficult to play ; a capital field anywhere, excelling particularly at short -slip . *F. M. Ingram : a steady bat , playing well on the off -side ; improved considerably last year, and gave a very good account of himself on more than one occasion ; a fair field . *E. B. Hills : maderuns very fast whenhe was once well in ; quick in the field . J. M. Swayne : a very steady bowler , using his judgment as regards pitch and pace ; is certainly better than he was; must still practise his batting steadily , and ought then to do well . P. Humphry: never seems to do himself justice as a bat; ought to do well next year ; a good and safe field anywhere, without being particularly brilliant ; a useful change bowler . A. L. Watson : played somegood innings early in the year, and will , we hope. develope into a good bat ; fielded well near the wicket , and would hold a catch in the long -field . *D. Watney : an improving bat, and had a good idea of bowling ; an excellent field at point . *C. L. Budd: a hard hitter with a moderate defence , and came to the rescue morethan once whenit was needed ; an excellent field , especially whennot near the wicket . *F. H. Haviland : a good change bowler ; ought to practise his batting and fielding . S C O T L A N D . F E T T E SC O L L E G E . Captain , W. Greenstock , Fettes College , Edinburgh. Greenstock , 1881-2-3 : an energetic and judicious Captain ; as a bat has the best style of the team , playing very hard bothback and forward ; is rather apt to makea weakstroke early in his innings , but whenwell set , hits well all round ; has lately proved a valuable slow bowler , with a good break back, coming very fast off the pitch , ought to vary his pace more; abrilliant field , covering a lot of ground , and throwing in very fast and straight ; good judge of a run. D. MacGregor, 1882 : has the best defence in theeleven, his back play being particularly good ; cannot judge a run well ; a good out-field and a fairly sure catch , but does not cover ground quick enough. N. K. Stephen , 1882-3 : the best bowler in the eleven ; has been most successful , always getting wickets ; bowls with his head, and has a puzzling action ; is usually very straight on the wicket . Asa bat has a good defence , but is too fond
