Orford : a very good all round player ; as a bat he can drive and hit to leg well ; plays forward with a straight bat ; a good change bowler ; can keep wicket well and a good field anywhere ; was a very good Captain last season . *J. H. Roberts : has greatly improved since last year, and developed into a very hard hitter , driving especially well and hard on the off side ; has not been quite so successful lately as at the beginning of the season owing, we think , to rather careless play in the games and at practice ; as a bowler , was fairly successful in the first few matches ; is very quick in the field , and has a safe pair of hands . *C. C. Stone : has been of great service to the eleven this year, and has always come to the rescue at a critical moment; is a very careful and painstaking bat with strong defence , but rather weak punishing powers ; he has bowled well all through the season ; a good field , especially in the slips ; also a good out field . *W. H. Thompson : has not turned out so well as expected from his play at the beginning of the season ; is rather too fond of trying to get balls that are on the wicket away to the leg side ; can bowl at a pinch ; is very slow and uncertain in the field . H. N. B. Richardson : a good bat with a free style , and can cut and drive well, but is very short of confidence ; a fair field , but open to improvement in that department; will be Captainnext year. W. F. Whitwell : a useful all round m a n; he puts the bat straight and hard against the ball , but is a great deal too fond of forward play ; he has bowled very successfully all through the season , and on his ground is very hard to play ; as a field he stops the ball well and throws in neatly , but is rather unfortunate in catches owing, we think , to want of confidence . T. E. Eccles : has not been very successful this year ; he does not play with a very straight bat, and is too fond of trying to get runs on the leg side from straight balls ; he hits hard, and if allowed to stop in can score freely ; a fair change bowler ; is pretty safe in the field and throws in well , but is too fond of looking about him; careless practice has had a good deal to do with his want of success . L. Martineau : a very useful and patient batsman , playing in good form and with a straight bat, but with a tendency to reach forward too much; he ought to be of good service to the eleven next year , when he is a little stronger and will be able to punish loose balls rather more severely . T. G. Philpott a fair bat , but seems to want confidence ; has lately come on as a slow bowler with a break from the off , and has bowled sometimes with great effect ; a good field , especially at point , where he is very active .
