E. Crawley (Capt., and for 1884) : steady bat with nice style ; fair , though at times uncertain field . *T. Buxton : a good bat, with nice style ; strong defence , has some good strokes on the off -side ; a safe field and catch ; should be very useful next year ; bowls a little . *V. Thompson : a disappointing bat ; played very well at the beginning of the season , but fell off greatly in batting and bowling ; a moderate field . E. M. Butler : a very fair bat ; defence not very strong ; always likely to make runs on a slow wicket ; should improve very muchnext year ; a good field . *B. A. F. Grieve : a destructive fast underhand bowler ; a steady bat, with a good stroke on the off -side , but weak on the leg -side ; a slow field , but a safe catch . F. H. Oates : a good sound bat, with pretty style , and stubborn defence ; cuts nicely ; a fair point ; bowls a little ; should be very good next year. A. R. Cox : a good wicket-keeper, and a moderate bat, though rather stiff at present . *A. F. Dauglish : a fair bat. but very weak on the leg -side ; a capital field . W. A. R.
