Barton: a first- rate bat with a fine defence and great hitting powers ; in bowling has been the mainstay of the eleven , being fast , with a good length , and always on the wicket ; has been wonderfully successful throughout the season ; a good field and sure catch anywhere ; winner of the average bat and average ball . E. C. Cobbold: very free bat, drives well to the off and scores fast at times , has much improved during the season ; a fair change bowler , good catch in the long field and a good throw in. S. V. Tayler : a good bat, but weakon the leg side , has been rather unlucky, but ought to come on next year ; a poor field . H. E. Walter : a fair but rather unlucky bat ; a splendid long-stop , and sure catch . F. W. Holden : a very pretty , stylish bat, with a strong defence ; as good a bat against good bowling as anyone in the eleven , but was rather unlucky this year ; a good field and catch , and a good slow bowler ; might have bowled more than he did. C. Ashburnham : a lucky bat, muchtoo fond of hitting across , but makes runs quickly nevertheless ; a good field , always sharp onthe ball and throws in well ; has been knownto bowl. C. Tufnell : as captain has been very successful ; has greatly improved in batting and, whenset , hits hard and drives well ; a good field in the slips , and a fair change bowler . T. Bigge : a good but rather nervous bat, and a sharp clean field ; has been unavoidably absent during most of the season . H. Lindsay : a splendid point ; as a bat has great hitting powers , but a poor defence ; ought to do well next year .
