Ford: a brilliant bat, hitting very hard all round and seldom failing to score , has good defence ; a safe catch in the long-field . W. B. Salmon (Capt.) : has a wonderfully strong defence which, combinedwith good cutting and driving powers, renders him an invaluable bat ; an active and sure field ; proved a most energetic and successful captain . A. Butcher : a steady and reliable bat, nearly always scoring ; a good field , but slow after the ball . A. J Jameson : bats in good style , with a pretty cut ; a brilliant field at cover -point (Sec. for 1884). G. F. Campbell : can bat well, and always hits hard, but often fails to score through rashness ; at times a good field (Capt. for 1884). E. B. Hill : unreliable both as a bat and a field , but sometimes does both well . G. F. Grace : improved as a bat, but still somewhat stiff in style ; a brilliant field . H. Thursby : has great hitting powers and cuts well , but fails through want of sufficient care ; can field and throw in well, and is a fairly good fast bowler. H. G. C. Hardwick : an excellent slow bowler, with a good break both ways, and was consistently successful throughout the season ; has a remarkable analysis on very hard wickets ; fell off in batting . C. A. F. Campbell : a hard-hitting bat, with good style , but owing to too great anxiety to score , was not very successful ; bowls mediumpace, very straight , and a good length . E. W. Brook : kept wicket with fair success ; only batted three times in the season. E M M A N U E L C O L E G E , C A M B R I D G E . H o n. Sec . , B. de B. Carey.
