T H EC O U N T I E SI N 1 8 8 3. 8 5 (1) Yorkshire v. Cambridge University . Cambridge, M a y24, 25, and 26. Rain, in all probability , saved the University eleven from defeat . The scoring on both sides hardly came up to expectations , and the batting of Cam- bridge was certainly disappointing , though the eleven was not the best the University could boast . All round, the cricket was a little below the standard ofbothteams. A tthe finish Yorkshirewanted78 to winwith all their wickets to go down. Yorkshire , 176 and 7 (for no wicket ) ; total , 183. Cambridge , 105 and155 ; total , 260. (2) Yorkshire v. Leicestershire . Leicester , June 22 and 23 . It was really only an eleven of Yorkshire which opposed Leicestershire , with Emmett, Peate, Ulyett , Harrison , Lockwood, Bates , and Hunter all absent . Grimshawhit well for 60 in the first innings , and Hall carried his bat through the second for 82 out of 152 fromthe bat, otherwise there was little of note in the batting . Mr. C. Marriott (61 and 11) and Warren (49 and 47) together scored 168 out of 228 madeby Leicestershire from the bat. Mr. H. T. Arnall , in the second innings of Yorkshire , took three wickets with successive balls . A t the close , Leicestershire wanted 67 to win with three wickets to fall . Yorkshire , 140 and 158 ; total , 298. Leicestershire , 151 and 81 (for seven wickets ) ; total , 232. (3) Yorkshire v. Leicestershire . Sheffield , July 9, 10, and 11. Hall, Bates , Ulyett , Peate, Lockwood, and Harrison were again absentees from the Yorkshire eleven . Despite their absence they had all the best of the drawngame, wanting only 43 to win with nine wickets to fall whenplay ceased . Mr. E. Lumbmadehis debut for Yorkshire . H ecarried his bat through the first innings of Yorkshire for 82 out of 183. Mr. C. Marriott , for Leicestershire , scored 77 out of 208 from the bat .
