THOUGH the summary of the season on paper was hardly satisfactory , there was an evident improvement in the all-round cricket of Sussex last year. The excellent form they showed at Sheffield in their defeat of Yorkshire was con- firmed in August by their very creditable show against the Nottinghamshire eleven then in the full tide of heavy scoring . The return of Jesse Hide from Australia strengthened the eleven materially by the addition of a very useful all -round player , and Mr. G. N. Wyatttoo proved an acquisition . They were never able to put quite their best eleven in the field , but altogether their cricket showedmuchmore promise than of late years , and were they to hit upon a really first -class bowler , with the batting there is now to be found in the team, Sussex would take a prominent place again amongthe Counties .
