James Lillywhte's Cricketers' Annual 1884
T H ECOUNTIESIN 1883. 7 3 (3) Notts v. Yorkshire. Nottingham , July 2 and 3. Againrain interfered with the game, and after the first day the cricket suffered materially . Lockwood, owing to an injury , was unable to play for Yorkshire , and his batting was muchneeded. In the second innings Ulyett contributed 61 out of 111 fromthe bat ; but no one else , except Bates and Hall, gotdouble figures either time, and Notts, whohad the best of the luck in going infirst , had the gamewell in handthroughout . Notts wonby nine wickets . Notts , 151 and 25 (for one wicket ) ; total 176. Yorkshire , 61 and 114 ; total , 175 . Shaw(Notts) Flowers(Notts) Overs. 66.2 3 5 Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 3 9 1 7 5 8 4 1 8 8 (4) Nottsv. Sussex. Nottingham , July 26 and 27. Though they had the best of the wicket Sussex, with only Mr. Whitfeld away, madean indifferent show. In the first innings they were all out for 61 ; in the second, Mr. Wyatt(62) and Humphreys(41) were credited with 103 out of a total of 142. The batting of Notts was very uneven, as Shrewsbury (98), Gunn(38). Barnes and Mr. C. W.Wright each 34, alone got double figures , and thelast seven batsmen only added 25 runs. Mr. B. E. Nicholls , of Winchester College , madehis debut for Sussex in this match. Notts wonby an innings and 27 runs . Notts, 230. Sussex, 61 and 142 ; total , 203. Attewell (1st innings Sussex) . Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 2 1 5 Overs. 2 1 . 2 9 (5) Nottsv. Surrey. Oval, August 5, 6, and 7. Surrey, chiefly through a finely hit 81, towards the close , by Mr. Roller , began well with a score of 236 ; but , on a splendid wicket , even this was insufficient . With eight wickets of Notts down for 228 there seemed every chance of a good match , but Selby (92 not out ) and Mills (74), by capital cricket , added 147 before the next batsmanwent, and the innings ultimately reached 405. Rain prevented play until late on the third day, and Surrey had made112 out of 169 wanted to save the innings (Mr. J. Shuter an excellent 58) for the loss of three wickets , whentime expired . Nine bowlers were tried for Surrey . In its two last innings at the Oval Notts has scored 906. Notts , 405. Surrey , 236 and 112 (for three wickets ) ; total , 348 . (6) Nottsv. Sussex. Brighton , August 27 , 28, and 29 . Avery creditable match for Sussex, who, in all likelihood , wouldhave won had the game been completed . Gunnplayed very fine cricket for his 52 and 68, but, withthe exception of Flowers' first score of 71, the batting of Notts was muchbelow its usual standard . Sussex were 70 behind on the first innings , but theyplayed up so well whenthey went in a second time with 230 to win, that 145 had been got for the loss of only four wickets when play ceased . As at Nottingham, Mr. Wyattwas chief scorer for Sussex , with 31 and43 not out. In the second innings of Sussex J. Hide secured 32 of the first 36 runs. Notts, 248 and 159 ; total , 407. Sussex , 178 and 145 (for four wickets ) ; total , 323 .
