Cambridge won those in 1839 , 1840 , 1841 , 1842, 1843, 1845, 1847, 1849 , 1851, 1856, 1859 , 1860, 1861, 1862, 1867, 1868, 1869, 1870, 1872, 1876, 1878, 1879 , 1880, and 1882. Oxford those in 1829, 1836, 1838, 1846, 1848, 1850, 1852, 1853 , 1854, 1855 , 1857, 1858, 1863, 1864, 1865 , 1866, 1871, 1873, 1874, 1875, 1877, and 1881. (6) Gentlemenv. Players. July 3, 4, and 5. Peate, owing to a sprained ankle , was unable to play for the Players , and Morley was also prevented by an accident . TheGentlemen on the other hand werean exceptionally strong eleven , and in addition to winning the toss they hadall the best of the wicket . The Players were placed at the greatest possible disadvantage in losing their best slow as well as their most reliable fast bowler. A sa consequence the Gentlemen scored very freely , and Fothergill , whowas selected to fill Morley's place, provedonly a poor substitute . T h efeature of the match was the batting of Messrs . Lucas and C. T. Studd. While they were together 204 runs were added to the score . This is , we believe , the largest numberever madeby two batsmen in Gentlemen v. Players . The light during part of the second innings of the Players was very bad so that generally they had all the worst of the luck. The Gentlemenwonby eight wickets . G E N T L E M E N .
