James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1883
T H EM A R Y L E B O N EC L U BI N 1 8 8 2. 6 5 h a da chance. Oxford wonthe toss , but despite the rain onthe first day the wicketplayed very well throughout . Mr. G. B. Studd's 120 was a fine display of batting, full ofclean and well timed hitting , but it was not without luck. Mr. Henery, whowas only put into the eleven at the last moment, justified his po- sition by somegood hitting . Perhaps though the best innings in the matchwas Mr.Kemp'ssecond score for 82 for Oxford. His runs were got at a critical time, andby thoroughly sound cricket . At every point the Oxonians were overmatched . In batting they were to a certain extent unlucky in having two of their safest run-getters , Messrs . Leslie and Walker, out of form; but in this as well as in bowling they were inferior to Cambridge. Their fielding , though that ofCambridge was not so good as was expected , was not up to University form, andthe managementof the team was decidedly faulty . The bowling altogether wasonly moderate , certainly not up to the inter -University standard . Cambridge w o nbyseven wickets , and wonfairly on their merits . Mr. G. B. Studd's 120 is the highest score in the Inter -University matches , with the exception of Mr. Yardley's 130 for Cambridge in 1872. O X F O R D . E. D. Shaw (Forest School ) st Wright bR a m s a y A.
