Theground played queerly in consequence of heavy rain , and batting was seen at a great disadvantage . Yorkshire hadall its strength , but the eleven only m a d ea poor show with the bat, even allowing for the condition of the wicket. Marylebonewas not very strong , but the effective slow bowling of Flowers enabled them to have all the best of the game. M.C.C won by 8 wickets . M.C.C. , indeed, hadquite a second rate team, butboth in bowling and batting , the Countyhad all the worst of the play. O n the first innings Kent had an advantage of eleven runs, but in the second Mr. Tylecote's 7 was the highest figure , and they were all out for 33, the second smallest score at Lord's . M.C.C. won by 9 wickets . M.C.C. and Ground 92and 47 (one wicket ), total 139, Kent103 and 33, total 136 . Rylott (M.C.C., fast roundleft ) Overs. Maidens. R u n s. In bowling there were Midwinter , Flowers,Fothergill , and Morley, but the only at all reliable batsmen in the eleven were the two first named. Flowers was the highest run-getter with 8 and 54, and he, with Mid- winter , Fothergill , andWild, of the five professionals , scored 159 out of 213 from thebat. For the University , J. G. Walker(87), E. Peake (53), and M. C. K e m p (37), contributed 177 out of 233fromthe bat. Messrs. Leslie and Whitingwere absent fromthe Oxford team. Oxford wonby an innings and 19 runs . Oxford 242, М.С.С. 106 and 117, total 223 . (9) M.C.C. and Groundv. Notts. Lord's , June 15 and 16. Themost exciting finish of the season at Lord's . Marylebone had only a weakeleven , but Scotton and Flowers, for reasons unknown, were both left out of the county team. The former represented M.C.C. with considerable success , indeed , but for him (52 and 27) the Club would have fared very badly. A tone time a Marylebone victory seemed certain . With164 to win Notts lost its seven best wickets for 54, and the match seemed over . Mills (59) and Barnes , how- ever , hit away so freely , that 99 were added before they were separated . They put on 80 runs in 50 minutes, and Notts wona most exciting match, play having beenextended until ten minutes to eight o'clock . Barnes carried out his bat for 66. Alfred Shawin the first innings of M.C.C. was credited with 35 maidens out of 40 overs . H e bowled for anhour and twenty minutes for two runs , without getting a wicket . Notts won by one wicket . Notts 117 and 164 (nine wickets ), total 281 . M.C.C. 136 and 144, total 2 8 0 . J
