One of the very best amateur batsmen of the day , having plenty of defence and very great hitting power ; not altogether safe in the field ; bowls at times ; was unfortunately , owing to illness , unable to play at all last year. R E N N Y-TAILYOUR, H. W. (Cheltenham and R. E.) Hits very freely all round, and gets his runs fast ; a fine field ; and bowls fast round as a change, didnot play muchlast year for Kent. TYLECOTE, E. F. S. (Clifton and Oxford). Played for Kentby residence ; a very keen cricketer ; good bat, with defence and no meanhitting power ; an excellent wicket-keeper , standing up pluckily to the fastest bowling ; played some fine innings last year . W I L S O N, C. (Cambridge) . A very useful all round cricketer ; fine bat ; play- ing very hard on the ball ; a good field ; bowls slow round-arm. K E M P, М. С. (Oxford), plays for Kent. L A N C A S H I R E . A P P L E B Y, A. Still maintains his reputation as a good straight left -hand bowler ; an improved bat, and safe catch ; has almost retired from county contests . B U T T E R W O R T H , W. S. A useful cricketer , bats in good form, and hits well to the leg ; capital field at long -leg . H A I G H, C. H. A new addition to the county ; a good bat, and drives well to the on-side ; is also a good field . H O R N B Y, A. N. (Harrow). Though not so successful as in 1881, is still one of the very best batsmen of the day ; has great punishing power , though at times a little too muchgiven to hitting ; a splendid field , and certain catch ; can use either hand ; proved himself an excellent Captain . LANCASHIRE, O. P. (Rossall and Cambridge). Goodbat, but not so successful in scoring as might be wished ; plays in neat form ; is also a capital field . LEESE, E. (Manchester ). A very good bat on a lively ground, but rather nervous on going in first ; is also a capital field . MILLER, H. (Uppingham). Useful all-round player ; good fast bowler with nasty delivery ; capital bat and field ; illness prevented him from playing for his county during the past season . O P E N S H A W, . E. (Harrow). A very neat and careful bat, and frequently makesgood scores ; is also a good field , especially at cover -point . PATTERSON, W. S. (Uppinghamand Cambridge.) A good bat, and slow round- arm bowler, with high delivery ; has almost retired from county cricket giving his services moreto the Liverpool Club when available . PORTER, E. H. A very fair bat, and hits well to the off ; a good field and fair change bowler. R O P E R, E. (Clifton ). A useful all -round player ; bats in good form, and drives well ; fair bowler, and goodfield . R O Y L E, V. (Rossall and Oxford). A most useful m a nto his county ; bats in good form, and drives well ; is also a splendid field at cover -point, having a very quick return . SCHULTZ, S. S. (Uppingham and Cambridge ). Good average all -round player ; has muchimproved, both in batting and fielding ; bowls pretty fast round- a r mand straight . STEEL, A. G. (Marlborough and Cheltenham ) A splendid all -round cricketer , andfit to represent any eleven ; has not been so successful with the ball as in previous seasons . STEEL, D. Q. (Uppingham and Cambridge ). Is a capital batsman , playing in good form, and drives well ; a fair field ; does not play muchfor his county .
