Anderson (captain , 40.1 ) : performed his duties to the satisfaction of everyone ; a splendid bat combining strong defence , with great power and judgment in hitting ; an excellent " lob " bowler and a good field and catch . G. W. Jones (13.2 ) ; wicket keeper to the Eleven , and filled the post admirably ; has excellent defence , and scores rapidly when set ; captain for 1883. A. Black (12.6 ) : uncertain as abat, hits hard occasionally ; a safe field and moderate bowler. *R. G. Macmillan (9) : plays very steadily and with a straight bat ; fields very well . G. Wilson (8.5 ): a painstaking bat, showing good defence ; useful field . J.G . Whitford (8.2 ): a good all -round field : is inclined to hit rather wildly . C. Smith (7-9 ) : very sure field at long leg and throws in well ; might be a good bat if he took more pains . J. S. Clark (7.5 ) : an excellent medium paced left -hand bowler , with plenty of "spin;" an improving bat . *J. A. Gilmour (7.1 ): the neatest bat in the Eleven but lacks confidence ; an excellent field at point . *R. W. West (5.8) an excellent field at cover-point , w i h avery quick return ; unsuccessful as a bat. C. F. Marsh (11.2 ) : a really good bat, with admirable defence , but was not so successful as in previous years ; kept wicket well when not bowling . T. Sankey (24.5 ) : a thoroughly sound cricketer : as a batsman has a strong defence , with good punishing powers ; as a bowler was the mainstay of the eleven . W. H. Hill (10.3 ) : a pretty bat, with strong defence ; has improved wonderfully during the season ; a good change bowler . S. J.. Randell (10.1 ) : has shown a uniform steadiness throughout , withgood defence . G. H. Ferris (5.5 ) : a fast bowler , straight aud good length ; at times difficult ; a free bat , but at times rash . H. Davis (4.4) : has a good style of batting , but short of confidence in matches ; a good field ; gave promise of being a good bowler , but was disappointing . J. H. Nichol (3.6 ) : a very promising cricketer at every point of the game, and with increasing size and strength m a y turn out quite first rate . H. M. Dexter (3.5) : has plenty of pluck, butwants finish in his play ; not quick in the field . F. G. Hudgell (3.4 ) : afast under -hand bowler , at times difficult ; was not successful as a bat ; an excellent long -stop . M. H. W. Davies (3.4 ) : awkward bat , making no use of his height and reach , but hits with a rustic style at times ; a good catch , but might be quicker after the ball . C. E. Jones (2.3 ) : a weak bat as to hitting powers, but not an easy wicket to bowl ; a fair field generally . W. Brantom (2) : a fast under-hand bowler ; poor bat ; quick field , with good return . E. A. T H E L E V E NIN 1882.-S.B. Fitzmaurice : has not had m u c hchance of displaying his bowling power, which is by far his strongest point ; fields well and bats fairly . F. S. Pictet : has done much service in the field ; should bat with more spirit . C. B. Lane : also wants much more spirit in his batting ; should overcome his nervousness by next season ; is a good out-field . E. L. Wallis (Captain ) : The mainstay of the Eleven in batting , which has been most success- ful this season ; has improved greatly in his wicket -keeping ; a good field . J. E. Ringwood : ill -luck and little practice have told very much against his batting powers ; has bowled sometimes , but with small success . R. Gee : has
