Homfray: Agood Captain in the field , but was awaythrough illness more than half the season ; an excellent field , trusting too much to one hand ; a difficult bowler on his day, coming in well from leg ; a stiff bat ; hits hard, but not straight . C. H. Marriott (Captain for 1883) : Apretty bat and hard hitter , but very uncertain ; a fair field ; bowls sometimes for a change . *W. Cheriton : Hasa fair but rather awkwarddefence until he begins to hit ; kept wicket generally , but was not successful . F. W . Burbury: Plays sound cricket generally , but is apt to turn his head awayfrom the bowling ; cuts well ; rather uncertain , but quick in the field . W. V. Thomas: A tolerably steady bat, but with awkwardstyle ; afair plain bowler, butneeds precision ; slow in the field . *H. I. Grosvenor : Not very successful at the bat,but can hit an over-pitched ball ; a very quick field , but not so sure as last season . G. K e m p: A nexcellent bat, with a very pretty style ; weakest onthe leg side ; a slow field ; m a ymakea first class cricketer . R. T. Wilson : Agoodbowler; steady and good length , coming in a little , but does not like being hit ; an improving bat. R. C. Gillett : A fast left arm bowler ; rather wild; stands well up to bowling , and is often hard to get out , though he has not a pretty style . I. W. Clarke : Ashowyand often successful bat ; a quick but rather uncertain field ; bowls a little , and will probabl y improve. W .
