Ward(Captain ) : a very fair bat ; improvedgreatly towards the end of the year ; has somegood strokes on the on- side; fair wicket-keeper . *D. G. Spiro : a muchimproved strong bat, with some goodstrokes on the off -side ; good field anywhere ; bowls a little . *R. Moncreiffe . capital bat with a stubborn defence , and good cutting powers ; fast medium bowler, with a good length ; fair field . T. Greatorex : good steady bat ; poor field ; should be very useful next year . H. E. Crawley : steady bat with nice style ; fair , though at times uncertain field , (Captain for 1883). * Lord Athlumney : bowled well at the beginning of the season , but fell off , owing to badhealth ; fair field , and moderate bat. *Hon. C. Anson : free hitting bat ; likely to get runs on dry wickets ; poor field , with a tendency to misjudge a catch . *H. Stewart Brown : moderate bat ; very good field , and can bowl a little . W. C. Staveley : fair bat with a pretty style ; can bowl a little ; should improve w h e nolder , next year. H. T. Hewett : good, though lucky bat, with somehard clean hits ; good bowler and field at point . *L.
