1 2 6 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. H A I L E Y B U R YE L E V E NIN 1882.-*E. A. Surtees has beencaptain for two years , and has contributed not a little to the improved cricket in the school by his continual attention to, and thorough knowledge of, the game; is a brilliant bat, hitting freely to all parts of the field and having a strong defence ; a sharp field at point whennot too close in. *E. B. Raikes : a first -rate bowler, with high action aud puzzling delivery ; has greatly improved as a bat, often showing very powerful play ; is slow in the field . W. Williamson has much improved , and, with still less flourish , would make a good bat ; as it is, he often plays a fine innings , driving well to the off . *E. Malden has not come on so well as w e expected , but, whenset, is a very fine hitter ; a first -rate cover-point. R. G. Legge : a useful and effective bat, with a style of his own, is a splendid out-field covering much ground and being a sure catch ; should pay attention to throw- ing in. W. A. Bailey , a quick run-getter , hitting well all round with plenty of nerve, though a trifle too impatient ; a first rate field . J. L. Carr, a steady bat, with fair defence , but is deficient in hitting powers. H. G. M. Amos has kept wicket well ; is a patient , good bat, who, by his steady play , has done the eleven good service , on more than one occasion , at a critical time. H. D. Carroll , a fast and rather erratic , though at times difficult bowler ; as a bat, he hits well, but should practise defence . R. P. Spurway , a steady , straight , slow bowler , with a good break-back ; is a careful and steady bat. R. H. D. Smithson , a difficult and straight bowler with a peculiar action .
