Ivo Bligh's team; Captain for 1883. N. M'Lachlan (Loretto and Keble ) : was unfortunately debarred from playing in theearly matches owingto an accident to his knee. The same cause probably prevented himfrom getting into his proper form ; an energetic Captain , though perhaps deficient in judgment . J. Patterson (Tonbridge , unattached ) : took the place of Harrison at the last moment; has a strong defence , but no hitting power; a slow left -handed bowler ; good length , but plain ; average field . E. Peake(Marlborough and Oriel ) : a very useful all round m a n; a fast bowler withplenty of pluck, and sometimes very successful ; dangerous hitter , and quick field . G. E. Robinson (Private and Jesus ) ; a left -handed bowler, coming in a great deal with his arm; but he is still disappointing , for , though he can bowl a few good overs , he very soon either gives up or becomes tired ; a slow field ; fair bat for abowler. E. D. Shaw (Private and Oriel ) : a good bat, but with a curious style , leaving his ground too muchwhenhe only means to play ; a moderate slow bowler, getting a good break on from the off , butdoes not keep a good length ; carried his bat throughout the first innings against the Austra- lians , and also did well against Cambridge; a good point . W. A. Thornton (Winchester and St. John's ) : very useful man, and madesome good scores this season ; has a very fine hit on the off side ; good field , but poor bowler. J. G. Walker (Loretto and Trinity ) : like Leslie , did well at Oxford, but, like him, he lost his form on coming to London ; a very good bat , particularly strong on the leg side ; good field . A. O. Whiting (Sherborne and Merton) : Has greatly im- proved in batting , with a very taking style ; did well both against the Austra- lians and Cambridge ; moderate field ; will not be up next season , as he has gone to Australia , where he has property . G. C. Harrison (Clifton and Oriel ) : wasunfortunately ill at the time of the University match, so could not play ; a slow bowler , with a good deal of twist fromleg ; butdid not bowl or bat so well as last year ; fair field . Asher : fine free- hitter , might study " defence " with advantage ; good field and useful bowler. A. O. MacKenzie : steady and serviceable bat, at times a brilliant , always a sure field . T. R. Aikman: not afraid of hitting across , has batted consistently well throughout the season ; room for improvement in the field . E. R. Wethey : Capt. 1882. D. H. Barry good and stylish bat ; fair change bowler. A. M . Latham : reliable wicket -keeper , without superfluous " dash " ; steady bat. W. M. Tatham : exceptionally good in the field when he likes ; has a straight bat; free syle and can occasionally bowl a good ball . W. M. Pike : great exponent of defensive cricket ; results , a trifle disappointing ; nevertheless a most useful member of the team . T. J. Blencowe : still a pretty bat , but, unlike previous season , ineffective , more practice might be recommended ; useful long-
