1 1 4 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. ST. JOHN'S ELEVENIN 1882.-J. R. Andrew : a disappointing bat ; plays in goodstyle , but failed to makeruns for the college ; a fair field . A. Batchelor : w a s ofgreat service to the Eleven, being a fast run-getter with strong defence , a safe longstop , and useful change bowler . J. Colman : (Captain ), fine hitting bat ; generally maderuns anddid good service with the ball , a good field near the wicket , proved an excellent captain . E. Fisher : a very successful bowler and will probably be more so if he learns to vary his place and pitch ; apromising bat, but has anawkward flourish which has proved fatal on more than one occasion . F. D. Gaddum : vide University Eleven . W. H. Garne : a greatly improved bat, rarely failing to make runs ; does not seem quite at home with slow bowling ; a good field . E. M. Hall : was more successful than last season , generally making runs ; a moderate field . J. H. Izon : rarely does himself justice in any department of the game owing to want of confidence ; is a good bat if once allowed to get set and bowls well at times ; an energetic field with good return . P. A. Robin ; is a great acquisition to the Eleven being a very good wicket- keeper ; a steady and painstaking bat. C. A. Smith : vide University Eleven. R. Spencer : a useful fast round -arm bowler ; scores fast at times . F. L. Thompson ; was always unlucky when playing for the Eleven ; is a good bat and field . Willock : unreliable bat ; very steady medium bowler , with a break from leg ; good field . J. Vintcent : good bat, but has not come off for his College this year ; a really difficult bowler , with any amount of break either way ; goodpoint . A. T. Cairnes : has not been able to play this year. G. A. Tomkin- son (Captain ) : fair bat generally , safe for a few runs ; a very good out-fielder . A. T. Polhill Turner : whenonce set a really fine bat, makinghis runs at a great rate ; brilliant field at cover -point ; a fair change bowler on a slow wicket . A. J. Bowman; the stone -waller of the Eleven and very safe for runs, but fell off rather at the end of the season ; poor field . C. L. Booth : a pretty bat, with a good defence ; has not been able to play in many matches ; a very good field . W .Bowman: steady and patient bat,but has not been very successful ; avery good bowler and field . J. Mackay : when he recovers his old form will be of the greatest service to the Eleven as a bat and wicket -keeper ; he kept wicket very well considering the little practice he had. C. Marriott : fair bat, generally comingoff in times of need; good change bowler and fair field .
