Grace : as a bat, stiff , and does notmakeenough use of his reach ; generally safe for a few runs ; energetic field , and certain long catch . J. L. Graham: the fast bowler of the eleven ; is invaluable to his side , generally securing most of the wickets ; bowls with good length , and varies his pace with judgment; smart short -slip ; is not a correct bat. H. G. C. Hardwick : a good slow bowler , wiih agreat deal of break fromleg, but rather uncertain in length ; bowled best at the beginning of the season ; useful bat ; not energetic in the field , E. B. Hill : a most valuable bat ; invariably goes in first , and seldom fails to score ; leaves a good deal to be desired in style ; at times fields brilliantly . C. Jones Bateman : bats with too muchflourish , but has a useful pull ; not quite so successful with his slow bow- ling as last year ; fair field . G. L. Lowe : kept wicket fairly , and batted with some success . W. B. Salmon : (Capt. for 1883) : well deserves his place at the top of the averages , having scored steadily through- out ; hits hard and gets his runs quickly ; might improve in style ; hard-work- ing field and safe catch . Wilson (Capt.) : a really first -rate bat, his forward play being particularly noticeable ; never fails to score ; a useful slow bowler, breaking both ways ; capital field , and as captain of a particularly strong team has shown a thorough knowledge of the game. J. Lees (Sec.) : a good bat, possessing great patience ; has had very bad luck this year, and consequently has notmaderuns up to his form; is a first rate College bowler. G. F. W. Cole : a most useful bat against loose bowling , being able to punish it to long extent ; does not play sufficiently straight whenhe first goes in to makeruns against good bowling ; occasionally bowls well ; fast right hand. C. A. Evors : a good sound bat, nearly always makes runs ; has a beautiful stroke off his legs , which he is apt to practice on straight balls ; a splendid field in the country . W. Orford : a good and greatly improved bat, at times rather too free ; a good field , and can take the wicket . P. M. Lucas : has shown marvellous improvement in his batting this year ; a most consistent scorer ; a good point . T. G. Bradshaw : a really good wicket -keeper ; has madea lot of runs for the College in fine style ; shows the sameproficiency in the cricket -field as on the running-path. H. B. Peele : whenstraight a very difficult fast bowler with break-back ; a very fair bat, and cuts anyamount; more life in the field . H. G. Topham: not a first class bat ; bowls slow left hand with considerable judgment ; would do better , if he'd " pitch 'em up ; " has scarcely come up to his school -reputation . F. Gilbertson :
