Wostin- holm , 10 Norfolk Row, Sheffield . YORKSHIREcould not be thoroughly congratulated on the result of the last season . In the earlier part they were successful , but towards the end their form wasat times unreliable . Lockwoodwas not in good health and Bates by no meansat his best with bat or ball for the same reason . In bowling , Yorkshire was undoubtedly strong , but its batting , towards the close particularly , when Ulyett failed , hardly fulfilled the expectations of the earlier matches . Out of sixteen fixtures , nine were won, five lost , and two drawn, one of them a moral victory for Yorkshire . Peate's bowling was unquestionably the feature of the season . In all he bowled 1000 overs for a trifle over one run, an over, and his 116 wickets were got on an average of under 10½ runs , a great performance for a slow bowler. Bates was not quite so successful on the whole with the ball , but Emmetthas rarely proved more effective , and he never failed to get wickets whenhe wenton. Hill seemed to have lost some of his " devil ," but Ulyett proved a very useful substitute , and as a fast bowler , the latter madea distinct advance on any of his previous performances . Peel, a colt , was tried as a bowler and proved very successful , but he is so like Peate in style , that his chances must suffer . In batting Ulyett is at the head of the averages . Lockwood , Emmett and Bates all lent useful aid, and in the Hon. R. B. Hawke, the county introduced an amateur who is sure to be a great acquisition to the batting strength .
