James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1883

9 6 L I L L Y W H I T E ' SC R I C K E T E R S ' A N N U A L . T H Erecord of Sussex cricket in 1882 was certainly not encouraging of itself . Outof ten matches , only two were won, and one of them , that with Derbyshire , at Brighton , by only three runs . W h e nin full strength , the County had agood batting side ; but its bowling showed little , if any, signs of improvement . Juniper at the outset seemed likely to be of use ; but he failed to fulfil these expectations . Lillywhite's retirement left the bowling in younger hands, and atleast one promising Colt wasfound in Hide, of Eastbourne. Otherwise , in manyways, the cricket was disappointing . Messrs . Newhamand Trevor both showed good cricket ; but Messrs . M. P. Lucas and Bettesworth played little , and the latter was not seen at his best whenhe did bat, owing to wantof practice . Neither Messrs . Ellis nor Greenfield cameup to expectation . After four innings , Charlwooddisappeared altogether from the eleven . R e s u l t sof M a t c h e s. Sussex had not quite its best eleven, but the bowling was so weakthat the Australians were able to reach a total without a parallel in an English match of any importance . The bad field- ing of Sussex contributed largely to the huge score of the Australians , as well as to Murdoch'sindividual contribution . Thefirst Australian wicketfell for 127, and the total reached 643. Of this sum, Murdochhimself contributed 286, not out, with only two lives , one from a very hard hit to point ; he alone scored 17 runs morein his one innings than the Sussex eleven from the bats in the match.
