Alcock, Surrey Ground, KenningtonOval, London, S.E. Assistant Secretary , W. W. Read. A Tthe outset Surrey bade fair to have a good working eleven , but these pro- mises were not fulfilled . Theywere, it must be admitted, very unfortunate in morewaysthan one. Mr. A. P. Lucas only played in three of the earlier matches, and accidents generally prevented them from having their full strength . Barratt , Jones , and Mr. Roller were all disabled at one time. Jones ' injury wasthe morefelt , as he never quite got back into the fine bowling he showed at the commencementof the season . Surrey found a useful fast bowler in Mr. C. E. Horner, but business prevented his playing in August. The Surrey bat- ting was , as usual , very uncertain . Haden, who promised so well in the Colts ' matches , proved a great disappointment ; and Abel was of little use except in the field . Messrs. Shuter and Readplayed good cricket , the former, late in the season , especially ; and Maurice Readplayed some good innings , though most ofhis best performances were done outside County cricket against the Austra- lians . Of 17 matches played in all , Surrey won6, lost 8, anddrew 3. R e s u l t sof M a t c h e s. MatchesPlayed, 14 ; W o n, 4 ; D r a w n, 3 ; Lost, 7. W h e n Club. Opnts.
