James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1883
T H EC O U N T I E SIN 1 8 8 2. 8 9 (7) Nottsv. Australians. Nottingham , Sept. 4, 5, and6. O S C R O F T ' SB E N E F I T . Thegood fortune of the Australians attended them again in this match ; and Nottshad all the worst of the game in losing the toss . The ground, at the outset , was slow from heavy rains , and whenNotts went in a second time it was all against the bat. It was entirely owing to the good play of Murdoch(72) that the Australians were able to claim a lead of 20 runs on the first innings , but after this they hadthings muchtheir ownway. In the second hands' the luck was m u c hagainst Notts, but their cricket at the same time was not up to their best standard . Helpedby the ground, Spofforth and Boyle bowled with such effect , whenNotts went in for their second innings , that they were all dismissed for 41, and the Australians won by 184 runs.
