8 8 LILLYWHITE'SCRICKETERS' A N N U A L. (3) Notts v. Australians. Nottingham , June 8, 9, and 10. The excellent performances of Notts against the two former Australian teams invested this third meeting with additional interest . O n a good wicket some fine all round cricket wouldhave been witnessed . Unfortunately though, rain before and during the game made the play altogether unreliable , and the game throughout was one for the bowler . Owing to an injured hand Spofforth wasunable to play on the third day, but Garrett andPalmer, as the ground was proved difficult enough, and he was not missed . The Australians lost their five best wickets for thirty runs, andit was only a careful stand by Blackhamand Palmer that madetheir first score respectable . A t the finish Notts wanted 127 to win, with nine wickets to fall , and as the wicket was they would have taken some getting . Notts, 110 and 12 (one wicket), total , 122. Australians , 142 and 106, total, 248. (4) Nottsv. Yorkshire. Sheffield June 26, 27, and28. Asingular contrast to the previous match. Oscroft won the toss for Notts butgave upthe innings to Yorkshire , a very unwise step , as the wicket played easily , especially at the outset . Lockwood (74) and Ulyett (56) mainly contri- butedto Yorkshire's total of 264, and it was only a stand by Gunnand Shaw late in the second hands of Notts that enabled them to save the innings . Peate and Bates between them were credited with nineteen of the twenty Nottingham wickets . Peate's eleven cost 114 ; Bates' eight , 101 runs. Yorkshire wonby eight wickets . Yorkshire , 264 and 29 (two wickets ) ; total , 293. Notts, 143 and 148; total 291 . (5) Nottsv. Sussex. Nottingham , August 3 and 4. Sussex, though only poorly represented , made a fair show in this match Thanksto a well played score of 60 by Mr. Newhamthey madea good start with a first total of 186. A tthe end of an innings they had 38 runs in hand, but they lost all their advantage when they went in a second time, and only Mr. N e w h a moffered any resistance to the bowling of Shawand Morley.
