James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1883

T H EC O U N T I E SI N 1 8 8 2. 8 5 (1) Middlesexv. Surrey. Oval, June 1, 2 and 3. Amatchproductive of some fair scoring thoughout . Middlesex had not its best team, and the two Elevens were fairly weighted at all points . The chief feature of the gamewas the excellent batting of Mr. S. W. Scott , for Middlesex . Hissecond score of 126 , indeed , very nearly wonthe matchfor his side . A t onetime the defeat of Surrey seemed certain , and while he was in their prospects seemedveryhopeful . Just before he got out, there were only 28 to get with four wickets to fall , but the last three batsmen were all caught at short-slip for two runs, andSurrey wona good gamewith only 25 runs to spare . Surrey, 226 and 202 ; total , 428. Middlesex , 147 and 256 ; total , 403. (2) Middlesexv. Notts. Nottingham , August 17, 18 and 19. A nextraordinary match in more ways than one. Middlesex was only weak with the two Studds and the two Lytteltons away, but they made a fine show notwithstanding . Messrs . Leslie (141 ), Walker (79), and Vernon (77) punished the bowling severely , and Middlesex were in nearly the whole day for 352. Ninewickets of Notts were downfor 69, but an unexpected stand was madeby the twolast batsmenShawand Morley, and the pair put on 50 runs . Notts had to follow on with a long score of 235 against them, but the spirited hitting of Shaw(88), and the fine cricket of Barnes (107) changed the whole aspect of the game. W h e nplay ceased there were 52 on with three wickets still to fall . The match was drawn. Middlesex , 352. Notts 117 and 287 (seven wickets ) ; total, 404. (3) Middlesexv. Yorkshire. Sheffield , August 21, 22 and 23. Rainmaterially prejudiced the chances of Middlesex at the critical point of the game. The scoring on both sides was only moderate, on that of Middlesex very uneven . In the first innings Messrs . Walker (63), Webbe (32), contributed 95 out of 132 from the bat, and the latter , when he went in again verynearly wonthe match for his county. Middlesex wanted 39 to win, but Mr.Webbefound no one to see him out , and he took his bat through the innings for 59. Yorkshire won by 20 runs . Yorkshire , 114 and 159 ; total , 273 .
